PostSubject: You get busted in a tree stand by a buck ...   Mon Jul 04, 2011 9:03 pm

This has happen to me and I'm sure it has happen to many of you at least once. A buck walks into range by your stand, you make a noise or drop something( I dropped my bow cloth case), he freezes, stares at you, wheels and runs. In my case it was during the Nov. rut and this buck ran into a mock scrape I had set up 20 yards up wind of my tree stand. I kept the stand in that tree but didn't hunt from it for a week. I never saw this buck again and he was a mature 10 pointer. I believe what I should have done( after a few days) is moved the tree stand down wind 50 -200 yards near a main trail/funnel and started hunting that buck again.
Any thoughts and what has been your encounters with bucks you have been busted by ?

he busted you, but that doesn't mean he knew what you were. It might have been the noise that actually scared him off. I've had deer look up at me but just keep on walking. I probably would have played it the same as you did. Many bucks, I only see once a season, wether they see me or not.

That is a tough call to make I have had mature bucks bust me as well, some I have seen again from the same stand others I have never even caught on camera any where on the property. One thing to keep in mind is that bucks travel thru new areas, never to come back to that area, I think this is where the idea that if you get busted they don't come back might originate from. I think that if a deer gets spooked for small reasons [ he didn't see you stand up and then blast a shot gun at him] they will come back or would'nt they run out of places to go? Deer spook for many reasons, I have seen a black tree rat spook a nice buck he almost turned inside out trying to jump away. Yotes spook them ect, ect, I think it is what you have the best confidence in doing, that will work, if you are sitting in a stand thinking, I should of moved, I should of moved, then you are not at your best and that could hurt your hunt in more ways than one. I say do what you feel is the best for you, go with your gut. I know guys that have been busted so they moved down the edge of the field only to see the buck walk right under where the stand used to be. Its a coin toss.

Would have went home threw the bow ,Scream at my wife ,and had bad dreams about the beautiful buck that i spooked after scouting ,putting up the stand waiting countless hrs. and from what you describe ,figuring , there goes a once in a lifetime buck. Sure wish i had put that bow cover somewhere else. LOL. Its been my luck that once those ole big boys get spooked they all of a sudden get 10 times smarter for the rest of the season if not the rest of your life and theirs.Guess it depends a little on where your hunting too . I hunt in Mass. on state prop. and have spooked my share. Its always a learning exp.and when you learn on a trophy IT HURTS!!!!! will pray for you LOL
