Herons - their favorite spot

Your right, thanks Final. I see them in the Owen Sound area as well . They are rare.

Yes they are, and that is sad, because they are a neat bird. When I had property in St Charles, a flock of 8 used to come into the area for a while, they make this prehistoric sounding call when they are flying, first time I heard it I was thinking what in the heck is that.

Tracer, actually "Icabods" are far from rare. They may be in your area but up here in the Soo they almost out number the geese. The farmers just hate them and keep asking us to pop them when we get the chance. Unfortunately, unlike out west, we have to say "no can do". My hunting partner brought some back from a hunt in the west and they were YUMMY. We have been pressuring the MNR to open a season in this area but so far to no avail.

I was reading up on them in a bird book, good numbers in the north of Ontario, rare to the south. They fly in a V formation resembling geese. A very cool bird.

If you watch them they are not all that hard to tell from geese when they fly. Geese are almost always flapping and cranes flap and glide then flap some more. Also they are usually very vocal and once you hear them they are hard to miss.
